Induction of Mutation in Salmonella typhimurium by UV Irradiation

Abstract

|
The mutagenicity of UV irradiation in salmonella tester strains of Ames was investigated by Ames plate method and a modified Ames assay adapted to the Automated Microbiology System-2 (MS-2).
TA 97, TA 98, and TA 100 strains were highly sensitive to UV light, whereas TA 102 strain was very resistant and could be used for the detection of UV-mutagenicity.
The UV irradiation (1 to 20 J/m2) produced dose-dependent increases of revertants in Ames plate test.
A modified automated salmonella mutagenicity assay using MS-2 exhibited the comparable results of UV mutagenicity in TA102 with a minimal requirement for materials and labor.
